Ledger patch notes

What has changed in Ledger, newest first. Ledger is my personal fitness tracker, and it lives in the Lab.

Coach upgrades and open Google sign-in

  • Effort per set: each exercise has a one-tap effort row (RPE 6 to 10) for the last set, with a hint such as "RPE 8: 2 reps left". The coach counts easy sets for less (RPE 7 or more in full, 6 at 75%, 5 at half, under 5 a quarter), and next-set targets follow your effort. An easy set gets a bigger step, RPE 9 adds one rep at a time, and RPE 10 is repeated first. The target line says why.
  • Deload weeks: the coach suggests a lighter week when 3 or more lifts stall at once, or after 8 straight weeks with a lift stuck, and never within 4 weeks of the last one. You choose "Make this week a deload" or "Not this week". During a deload Next up shows about half the sets at about 90% of last time's weight, and the week is left out of trends, targets and averages afterwards.
  • Bodyweight against your goal: the coach checks the last 4 weeks of weigh-ins against a healthy weekly change for your goal. The Body tab shows your pace, an On pace, Too fast or Too slow tag and a shaded target band, and the Overview adds a note when the pace is off. Cut now has three styles: Steady (0.5% to 1% a week), Aggressive (1% to 1.5%) and Fat loss while building (0.2% to 0.5%).
  • This week so far: a new Coach panel shows sessions, volume and working sets against your 4-week average, and whether you are ahead of or behind your usual pace for the day. The weekly review is now labelled "Last week's review", and the Overview volume headline shows this week with your average beside it. This week is compared with a full usual week everywhere, so the Overview line reads like "volume already 58% over a usual week" and the tiles and the Coach panel show "96% of avg wk", replacing a pace-scaled figure that made a strong week read as "158% ahead".
  • Google sign-in for sync is now open to anyone. Until now it was limited to invited test accounts.
  • Fixes: the stalled and falling Lift trends tips on the Coach tab were blank and now give advice, the body map readout shows how many sets were logged when easy sets were discounted, and with no workouts yet the New session card on the Log tab sits centred.

Body map, forearms and patch notes

  • The body map is redrawn as an anatomy atlas, with engraved front and back figures and fibre hatching. Tap a muscle to see its sets, target range, rest and exercises.
  • A Sets and Rest switch recolours the map. A This week and 4-week average switch scales the target to the day you are on, so a Wednesday is judged on pace.
  • The lines draw themselves in when the tab opens, with a Replay button. A small version of the map sits in the Overview coach panel and opens the Coach tab.
  • Biceps, triceps and forearms are now separate muscle groups. Pressing counts half toward triceps, pulling counts half toward biceps, and grip work such as hammer curls and deadlifts counts half toward forearms. You can change a custom exercise's muscle group on the Lifts tab.
  • Forearms aim for 25 percent fewer sets than the bigger muscles (7.5 to 15 a week for size) and count for less when the coach picks what to work on next.
  • A Patch notes link in the top bar on desktop, and under What's new on the Data tab.
  • Fix: tidier spacing on the body map's tap hint and colour key.
  • Lifts tab: the chart and stats for the chosen exercise now come first, with your exercises underneath in a list that scrolls on its own. On a phone, tapping an exercise further down jumps back up to its chart.
  • Fix: on iPhone, the Date and Started fields when logging or editing a past workout no longer run off the card or overlap Minutes.

Coach, rest timer and a tidier Log

  • A Coach tab and a coach panel on the Overview. It is rule based, so it works offline and explains its suggestions.
  • Suggests a new workout and follows your training rotation. It fills in sensibly while it is still learning your habits.
  • A rest timer that starts when the prefilled reps were right.
  • History now lives inside the Log tab.
  • The Home Screen app updates itself, and the muscle map is readable on a dim screen.

Sync across devices

  • Sync your log between phone and laptop through a file in your own Google Drive, with no server of mine in between.
  • A sync map on the Data tab shows this device, the Drive file and each other device with when it last synced.
  • Works offline. Changes wait on the device and go up when you are back online.
  • The Home Screen app now keeps its header clear of the iPhone status bar.
  • Weekly volume shows full numbers, and hovering a bar shows the week and its volume.
